The Government of India launched the Skill India Mission to empower the youth with industry-relevant skills and provide better employment opportunities. This mission, started in 2015, focuses on offering free skill-based training to young people across the country, especially those who are less educated or who left school between Class 10 and Class 12.
The aim of the Skill India Mission is to train around 24 lakh youth with practical skills so that they can either find jobs or start their own businesses. It is closely linked to the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), which ensures that participants do not have to pay any fees for training.
Course Duration and Certification
Under this scheme, candidates can choose from training programs lasting three months, six months, or one year. After completing the course, they receive a nationally recognized certificate, which helps them get jobs in different parts of the country. This certification is valid across India, making it easier for skilled candidates to secure employment in their chosen field.
Training Fields
The Skill India Mission offers training in around 40 technical and vocational sectors, including:
- Construction
- Electronics and hardware
- Furniture and fitting
- Handicraft
- Leather technology
These courses are designed to enhance the abilities of youth so that they can become self-reliant and even create jobs for others.
Long-Term Goals
Also known as the National Skill Development Mission, the program aims to make over one crore people self-reliant every five years through skill training. By bridging the gap between education and industry needs, the scheme plays a major role in boosting employment and entrepreneurship in India.
